Retro Futurism and the Paleo-Future!

Just FYI, this post is completely unrelated to wedding video!

Two of my non-wedding interests are Retro Futurism and Paleo-Future. Retro Futurism is the idea that society creates tools, clothing styles, cars, etc. to resemble what people in the 1940’s and 50’s thought they would look like in the future. Big boxy ray guns, large nuclear powered vehicles, that sort of thing.

This directly ties in with another interest of mine, Paleo-Future. Paleo Future is about comparing what people thought the world would be like in the future to how it really turned out. Time capsules are a great example of this. People always put predictions into time capsule as to how their town/city will be when the capsule is opened. Reading all the outlandish thins people though would happen brings me regular amusement and occasionally I’m completely surprised as to how accurate other predictions are.

Here’s an example borrowed from one of my favorite blogs, Paleo-Future where my own comments appear in RED:

1950-dec-27-robe-paleofutur

The December 27, 1950 Robesonian (Lumberton, NC) ran an Associated Press article titled, “How Experts Think We’ll Live in 2000 A.D.” The article covered the future of movies, commercial flight, space travel, medicine and women, among many other topics.

- Wireless transmission of electric power, long a dream of the engineer, will have come into being. There will be no more power lines to break in storms. A simple small antenna on the roof will pick up the current for lighting a house.
I wish!!

- In 2000 we shall be able to fly around the world in a day. We shall be neighbors of everyone else on earth, to whom we wish to be neighborly.
Very True!

- The nation’s industrial and agricultural plant will be able to support 300 million persons 50 years from now - twice the present population. Land now unproductive will be made to yield. Science will steadily increase crop production per acre. Technological, industrial and economic advances will give the American people living standards eight times as high as now.
Amazing! Completely on the mark. Guy should have put some money down on this prediction!

- Combination automobile-planes will have been perfected.
Haha! Sure would help with that I-76 traffic!

Hope you enjoyed this little insight into my non-wedding interests! Stay tuned on the blog because some exciting trailers will be coming soon!

Squirrels!

We’re not always serious here at Aubert Films! Last week I was teaching my intern, Alysa, about the importance of utilizing depth of field when shooting video at a park near my office. While playing around with a special camera adapter, we noticed a woman feeding peanuts to squirrels. Naturally, we had to document it! [...]
